Yaesu FT-991 vs FT-897 with internal LDG YT-100 antenna tuner

My colleague Ernesto (EA1LQ) pointed out to me that Yaesu had just brought to the market a new compact radio, the FT-991, that featured a built-in antenna tuner and therefore was the natural substitute of my FT-897D in which I fitted an LDG YT-100 antenna tuner in the battery compartment. I must recognise that I was very excited and looking forward to find out more about the new radio.

When I looked it up on yaesu, the first difference was the big colour display and the impression it was bigger than the FT-897D. But I was more interested to see the specifications, and here they are:

So it seems that the FT-991 is 10 percent lighter than its competitor, which can be partly  due to the fact that it does not feature an internal battery. The consumption on receive is also between two and three times higher than on the FT-897D, which is also a handicap when operating portable on battery power. Finally, the range of the tuner is much narrower, which can be a minus when operating portable.

All in all, the conclusion is that the FT-991 seems to be a very nice radio, with a colour display, an USB port and new features, and is a welcome addition to the Yaesu line, but is designed with a different style in mind and is therefore not a direct replacement for my Yaesu FT-897D with internal tuner and battery.

FT-897D with internal LDG YT-100 antenna tuner

Tjis is a picture of my FT-897D with an internal YT-100 antenna tuner and a small LiPO battery.
I put this picture on the blog because I had posted a video of the radio with the internal tuner in action on Youtube, and there was a person who disputed the title of the video. He said that the tuner was not internal. So this picture is for him.

I also replaced the battery switch with a push-button with a led to activate and monitor the operation of the tuner.
On the picture you can also see some DC terminals coming out from the battery compartment. These are to charge the small 2200mAh battery that I also fit in the space left after adding the automatic antenna tuner.

Expedition to YO-land: Which radio to take?

I am preparing an expedition to YO-la and am in doubt about which radio to carry with me. The three candidates are a Yaesu FT-897D, a Yaesu FT-857D and a Yaesu FT-817ND. Each one of them has its own advantages. The FT-897 is the most powerful, because it can give its full output of 100W with the YT-100 antenna tuner, and the FT-817ND is the lightest. The FT-857D is in between, being able to work at 60W with the SG-211 tuner. What do you think?

My friend Robi, who has recently passed his test to become a licensed radio amateur, helped me prepare this cable, and was also recording this video.

My new radio trolley

Here is a picture of my new radio trolley, which I am preparing for the new award programme called Beaches On The Air (more info on www.beachesontheair.com).
My father Juan (EA1AQ) has been helping me in this project.
It consists of a Yaesu FT-897D with an internal LDG YT-100 antenna tuner and a 10Ah LiFePO4 battery.
I am still working on the antenna mounts for HF and VHF-UHF. I am thinking of using a couple of mirror mounts (Nagoya RB-46).

Yaesu manpack naked

On this video I test the Yaesu manpack in horizontal postition, outside the protective rucksack. In this configuration you can apreciate better how the manpack is made.

This video was made in early September 2012, immediately after I built the manpack in its current form, with a swiveling antenna mount. On the video you can also see my father (EA1AQ) and my younger son David, who was about to become one year old.

On this video I explain how my portable backpack HF radio works. I explain that radio set consists of a Yaesu FT-857D, an SGC SG-211 antenna tuner, a military whip antenna, and a 5Ah LiPo battery.

I show how the antenna tuner works and test it in a QSO with SU9VB in Egypt on 15m SSB.

Yaesu FT-897D with internal YT-100 antenna tuner

Here are a couple of pictures of my FT-897D with an LDG YT-100 antenna tuner fitted inside.
In the first picture you can see the rear top view of the radio. As you can see, I added a couple of binding posts for wire antennas and a push button to activate the tuner. I also plan on adding another UHF connector for coax-fed antennas in the near future. I am just waiting for the connectors to arrive.
In the second picture, you can see the rear bottom view, with the four phillips screws that hold the tuner board in place. The back cover is raised a couple of milimiters so that the tuner has enough room inside the battery compartment.

Yaesu FT-897D with internal antenna tuner: First test

I this video you can see the first test of my new project: a Yaesu FT-897D with an internal antenna tuner.

I intend to use this as a table-top portable radio. This is not intended as a backpack transceiver for SOTA operations in adverse conditions. For that purpose, I have opted for my FT-857 manpack, which is smaller and lighter.

My FT-857D manpack

Here are some pictures of my low-weight FT-857D backpack transceiver. It consists of an FT-857 transceiver, an SG-211 automatic antenna tuner, an antenna base for military whips, and a 5200mAh LiPo battery pack. The particular whip I use has a metric thread (M10). It was property of the army of the GDR.
The frame is made of aluminum and the total weight of the set is around 4Kg. I developed this backpack transceiver with SOTA (Summits on the Air) operations in mind, so I gave priority to low weight and rapid deployability, for when weather conditions are adverse. The rucksack also protects the radio from bumps and from the elements.

Some pictures of the FT-857 manpack

These are some of the pictures of the light HF manpack transceiver based on the Yaesu FT-857 that I took today because several people asked me to through the FT857 Yahoo group and directly through my blog. On the first picture you can see the details of the antenna mounts for HF and VHF-UHF made out of aluminum plate. You can also see the SG-211 automatic antenna tuner attached by straps. Finally, the homebrew NiMH battery I made out of 11 4000mAh rechargeable batteries that I bought at a well known German supermarket chain.
As you can see on the second picture, the total weight of the radio is 4350g. That is a great improvement over the ft-897 manpack, which weighs 8.5kg or so. The weight improvement comes from a lighter transceiver (almost 2kg lighter), lighter tuner and using just one battery instead of the two that the FT-897 can hold internally.

FT-897D Solar - Faro de Cacilhas (CR5FC)

This is a video of a QSO with Portuguese special event station CR5FC from Faro de Cacilhas, operated by the Portuguese Navy's radio amateur group.

In this video we were operating an FT-897D with a 13W solar generator that helped extend the duration of the internal batteries. The power was 20W and the antenna was a 2.4m whip.

Yaesu FT-897D Camo

This is my FT-897D with some camo paint. I am not entirely convinced about the final result, but I wanted to show you my version of camo stripes. I think this is not bad for a first test.
I will probably end up painting evarything black, but I will use another type of black paint (water based) that has a less shiny finish than this one, and also dries faster.

Zebra stripes

It was previously believed that zebras were white animals with black stripes, since some zebras have white underbellies. Embryological evidence, however, shows that the animal's background color is dark and the white stripes and bellies are additions.[1]
The stripes are typically vertical on the head, neck, forequarters, and main body, with horizontal stripes at the rear and on the legs of the animal. The "zebra crossing" is named after the zebra's black and white stripes.
It has been suggested that the stripes serve as visual cues and identification.[1] With each striping pattern unique to each individual, zebras can recognize one another by their stripes.
Others believe that the stripes act as a camouflage mechanism. This is accomplished in several ways. First, the vertical striping helps the zebra hide in grass. While seeming absurd at first glance, considering that grass is neither white nor black, it is supposed to be effective against the zebra's main predator, the lion, which is color blind. Theoretically, a zebra standing still in tall grass may not be noticed at all by a lion. Additionally, since zebras are herd animals, the stripes may help to confuse predators - a number of zebras standing or moving close together may appear as one large animal, making it more difficult for the lion to pick out any single zebra to attack.[4] A herd of zebras scattering to avoid a predator will also represent to that predator a confused mass of vertical stripes travelling in multiple directions, making it difficult for the predator to track an individual visually as it separates from its herdmates, although biologists have never observed lions appearing confused by zebra stripes.
A more recent theory, supported by experiment, posits that the disruptive colouration is also an effective means of confusing the visual system of the blood-sucking tsetse fly.[5] Alternative theories include that the stripes coincide with fat patterning beneath the skin, serving as a thermoregulatory mechanism for the zebra, and that wounds sustained disrupt the striping pattern to clearly indicate the fitness of the animal to potential mates.

FT-897 Portable

Here is a picture of the Yaesu FT-897 with the FC-40 antenna tuner attached. This tuner is suitable for long wire and whip antennas.
On the pic you can see the aluminum box painted with white multipurpose primer. I haven't decided yet the colour of the final paint. The main candidates are olive green, black, o a combination of both.

I have attached the third handle to the FT-897D and installed a 3/8-24 antenna mount. These are the results of the first test, on the 12m band.

The radio is ugly but as my friend Alex says, it's nothing that a bit of paint cannot solve. Knowing his tastes, I think I know what colour he was thinking of...

Iron Man

Yesterday I was working in my workshop to continue the job I had started on Sunday with the help of my friend Robi and this is was came out. As always, it is only a prototype at an early stage.
Lots of connectors are still missing on the front panel: a 3/8-24 mount or quick disconnect for the hf antenna, a female PL connector the vhf antenna, A stainless steel ground binding post...
A third handle will provide protection for the connectors and a third foot for the radio to stand with the front panel up. It will be made of solid square section aluminum like the other handles.
The case could also be lightened with some holes that would also improve the speaker sound and give access to the battery switch.
Finally, everything could be painted and the colour has not been yet decided. Suggestions are accepted...
In the beginning I said this is just a prototype and, when I look at the pictures now, I think I must be a bit masochistic, because it is really hard to bend this aluminum. I could have made the prototype with carton board or at least a thinner aluminum plate...
